Why blogging for money is so difficult

Despite what many get rich quick ebooks may say it's not easy making a living blogging, or from any type of website. The truth is that many webmasters struggle to even pay their hosting bills from advertising or sales, so why do so many blogs struggle to make money?

Un-targeted traffic. This is a major problem as I see so many blogs shooting for general traffic in the hope that just in terms of volume some of it will make money. The truth is that advertisers are only really interested in targeted traffic as it's the only type that converts into sales.

Even if you are getting targeted traffic to a specific niche it still needs to be traffic with a buying purpose in mind. For example if you have a funny videos site there's really no way to make money from it because nobody visiting is expecting to make a purchase at any point, either for you or your advertisers.

Your content also plays a big part in how effective you are in converting visitors into sellers. There's a real skill in funnelling people to the buy button on your online store because you need to convey the message of what you're selling and also the trustworthiness that you're going to deliver.

The design of your site can also negatively affect your sales. That new flashy menu you had created may look cool but if it makes it too difficult to navigate your site then you'll be losing customers. People on the net have very little patience so you need to make your site as easy to use as possible.

Using the wrong type of advertising is something I see again and again, even on really successful blogs. For a start advertising should always be related to the content and the sites theme. It amazes me when I see banner ads for carpet cleaner on tech news blogs, how's that ever going to convert?

It's not easy converting blog readers into money as I hope I have shown, but at the same time it is possible if you use a little common sense and also plenty of testing to see what works.
