Listened to a radio advert or read one in a paper for some investment fund, they always have that small section to point out, 'past performance doesn't guarantee future performance'.
Isn't it curious that we right away say that this is to cover the negative scenario the fund starts losing cash, it is clear that they could also do better than previously naturally this is less certain with funds that over inflated their previous performance.
What has this got to do with you? Well the same is true for you, me and the rest of the world, but with a twist.
Most folks at some particular point in their life look back at things from their past and consider things they failed at, or that they weren't good at, and conclude that this implies they cannot do it and won't.
Sure this may be the argument for flying unaided, or running quicker than Usain Bolt but for the more realistic things in life this is simply wrong. Taking one or two examples of not doing well at something as explanation you are no good at it is insanity we might all still be crawling if that were right.
All abilities learned have to some extent a factor of trial, blunder and learning otherwise there would be no requirement for schools or the education system, which attempt to teach not only abilities but methods for learning.
Okay, so lets say you buy into the principle that we learn from our mistakes, and that it's not our mistakes that characterise us, rather our learning from them. Do you know all the convictions in yourself, about others and the world, that you're living your life from every single day?
The surprising thing is that we are neither conscious of all of the beliefs we walk around with that were formed from past disasters, that are presently dictating our experience of the world. What is worse they might have served us in the past, but we rarely question them or are even conscious of them.
Take as an example that you were told by your mom and pop, 'don't talk with strangers ', drummed into you repeatedly in your formative years. It is clear that you may very well be lugging around with you the idea that strangers are somehow deadly. Imagine the impact that would have on someone's life...
Be open to the possibility that life set backs, mistakes and disasters during the past, are in some way a learning experience to help you succeed. Because unlike a money fund you can learn from your mistakes, it is down to you what you do with that learning.
