Self defence comes from the confidence that you have the ability to defend yourself. A person uses physical action less than 10% of the time, but we focus on training the physical action over 90% of the time. We do this on purpose and for a very specific reason.

The majority of conflicts can be diffused or avoided altogether because of a person's Self-Confidence. The person being attacked, and how they respond to the initial intimidation will change how the attacker continues in their attack. This reaction in the person being attacked, is directly linked to self-confidence in the person being attacked (personal self confidence) and how well they believe they can defend themselves. If the attacker meets someone that stands up to them, commonly the attacker will just move on to another victim, which is good for the being being attacked. This comes from the self confidence of the person being attacked knowing they can defense themselves.

From this knowledge of being able to defend themselves, they have the confidence to stand up and say what is needed or to just stand up. BJJ builds this specific self confidence from the Belt system, and from the sparring practice during class. By setting goals (in Martial arts, the colored belt), training towards that goal, and then acheiving that goal, a person builds self confidence that affects them inside and outside the martial arts school, and in life in general. This in itself is one of the greatest aspects to Brazilian Jiujitsu

Brazilian Jiujitsu trains physical action so much becuase it is the fallback for self-defense situations.

However when the confidence, or words fail, then the actions need to take over. We have spent a lot of time travelling all over the world finding the most effective self defence. I had a student recently, 16 years old, traveled to Spain on a school trip. There she was in an encounter with a pickpocket. She tried to reason with this pickpocket, but then he lunged at her, trying to push her shoulder.

Responding to this attack at her shoulder, she defended herself using the techniques she was taught. She was able to get him to leave both of them alone. BJJ taught her the confidence to do this for both of them. For her the training in BJJ gave her a lot as she has said that if she did not train Brazilian Jiujitsu this self defense would not have happened. However also she wouldn't have been confident enough to take the trip in the first place.
