When looking for marine jobs dealing with offshore oil and gas there are five areas of focus to consider. Each of these five types of jobs has a specific specialization that is required to get the job done. You can look for jobs in the fields of drilling; operating; contracting; floating production, storage and offloading or FPSO; or service. Whichever field you choose it is important to train for your specific area.

One type of company dealing with oil and gas production is drilling. This company is responsible for all of the steps that occur to drill into the ocean floor to reach the resource. Companies in this field travel all over the world to get the job, not to mention will leave as fast as needed.

The most well known to the American public are the operating companies. These businesses are the ones responsible for obtaining the licenses for producing and exploring the ocean. Not only do most of these companies explore, many of them are in charge of the operation of the rig.

Contracting companies take pride in keeping the equipment in working order. The largest part of this field deals with maintenance and operational upkeep.

The FPSO field is a unique field that could prove to be one of the more interesting. This field deals with the process of storing the material once it has been brought up from the ocean floor. The floating storage containers are large barges that have been altered to stand in one place for many months and possibly years.

The final field includes the service companies. These are the ones that are hired to assist with some part of the operation as needed. There are many chances to find yourself working in one of these fields, but make sure you start with the training.
