Public speaking has varied styles and approaches - this is what James states in one of his articles on public speaking. Basic Skill Num. 1 - Research Skills Nothing can make a speech better than researching on the topic that one intends to talk on. Likewise, you should research on what type of audience will listen to you. You can start with knowing the needs and level of knowledge of your audience when you plan your speech. No two types of audience are the same; take each one as a different challenge every time. Every speech should be designed for information pertinent to the type of audience.

Basic Skill Num. 2 - Dressing Skills A public speaker is making a visual presentation whenever he makes a speech. The first thing your audience will notice is the way you're dressed; be sure it's appropriate for the audience and the occasion. Let your persona and your movements exude confidence and professionalism. If you dress and act the part, your audience is sure to be help captivated.

Basic Skill Num. 3 - Introduction Skills Make sure the first thing you say catches the audience's attention at the same time that it builds anticipation in them. This is how important your introduction is - it serves as the bait to catch your audience's attention. If you fail to impact your audience with your introduction, your speech will be just one of the many that are easily forgotten.

Basic Skill Num. 4 - Outlining Skills Yes, outlining your speech is an important preparation phase that you should learn. Without an outline, it's easy get off topic and lead your audience astray too. Watch out that you keep on topic and touch on key points - this is where an outline can help you with.

Basic Skill Number 5 - Support Skills Every speech has teaching points that need to be supported with an anecdote or a personal experience. You can use accurate historical accounts or even personal stories of failure and success too.

Basic Skill Num. 6 - Theatrical Skills Public speaking is a matter of dramatic acting too. Your tone inflection, your movements and gestures, pauses, eye contact, etc. are all part of the theatrics. These theatrics connect speakers to their audience emotionally.

Basic Skill Num. 7 - Closing Skills A good closing remark should elicit a certain emotional response in the audience. Learn the art of closing well or your audience may regret having come at all instead of clamoring for more.
